Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Domestic violence remains a significant social issue in Nigeria, with many victims suffering in silence due to cultural stigma, lack of awareness, and fear of reporting abuse. Girei Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa State is not exempt from these challenges, with domestic violence affecting individuals and families in the community. Radio drama, with its engaging and accessible format, has proven to be an effective tool for raising awareness about social issues, including domestic violence. Through storytelling, radio dramas can highlight the consequences of abuse, challenge harmful gender norms, and promote healthier relationships (Akinyele & Aliyu, 2023; Murtala & Bello, 2024). This study explores the impact of radio drama on changing perceptions of domestic violence in Girei LGA, focusing on its ability to influence attitudes and behaviors toward abuse.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite various efforts to combat domestic violence in Nigeria, there is still a lack of widespread understanding of its impact, and many individuals continue to view it as a private matter. In Girei LGA, domestic violence is prevalent, but there is limited public awareness of the available support systems and legal protections. Radio drama, as a form of entertainment and education, can play a crucial role in changing perceptions of domestic violence, but its effectiveness in this regard has not been adequately explored. This study aims to assess the impact of radio drama in changing public perceptions of domestic violence in Girei LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of radio drama on changing perceptions of domestic violence in Girei LGA.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of radio drama in challenging harmful gender norms related to domestic violence in Girei LGA.
3. To explore the role of radio drama in promoting awareness of available support systems for domestic violence victims in Girei LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How does radio drama influence public perceptions of domestic violence in Girei LGA?
2. To what extent is radio drama effective in challenging harmful gender norms related to domestic violence in Girei LGA?
3. How does radio drama contribute to promoting awareness of support systems for domestic violence victims in Girei LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Radio drama significantly changes public perceptions of domestic violence in Girei LGA.
2. Radio drama is effective in challenging harmful gender norms related to domestic violence in Girei LGA.
3. Radio drama positively contributes to promoting awareness of available support systems for domestic violence victims in Girei LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of radio drama as a tool for raising awareness about domestic violence and changing societal perceptions. The findings will help guide media campaigns aimed at addressing domestic violence, promoting gender equality, and supporting victims. The study will be useful for policymakers, NGOs, and media practitioners working to combat domestic violence and its harmful effects in Nigerian communities.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Girei Local Government Area in Adamawa State and focuses on the role of radio drama in changing perceptions of domestic violence. It does not include other forms of media or regions outside of Girei LGA.
